1. 2006 Year at a Glance
The 2006 CKA/CASK year is shaping up to be an exciting year with
various programs and events being rolled out. Certification courses;
training programs; competitions and club services are being planned
across the country. The provincial CKA/CASK network continues to
grow providing more opportunities for networking and
inter-provincial events.
Please refer to the calendar page on the CKA/CASK website (
www.kickboxingcanada.org) for more information on upcoming items.
The calendar is updated regularly as events are confirmed. For more
detailed information on any listed event, please contact the CKA/CASK
office via email.
2. Certification Courses
A few courses have been added to the 2006 Calendar. These have been
organized through specific member Clubs: Progressive Martial Arts -
Thunder Bay (January 21-22), Impact Zone - Kingston (February
18-19), and TAZ Kickboxing (March 25-Coaching Course only). If your
Club wishes to host a course (Coaching and/or Officials) please
contact the office for more details.
On Saturday May 21st the first Level II Officials Course will be
held. This course will be open to people who have completed their
Level I Officials Course. Level II Officials will be certified to be
Referee's at CASK sanctioned events. As part of the new CASK
Official Certification Program (OCP) - Level I certifies judges at
CASK events; Level II certifies referees; and Level III certifies
Chief Officials. Please note: CASK Level I certified officials have
refereed in the past at international events, however the new
certification requires the Level II course for referee status at
events within Canada. There will be no grand-fathering in at any
level of the OCP.
Also - in either July or August, CKA/CASK will be hosting the first
Train-the-Trainers courses for both streams of courses (Coaching and
Officiating). Persons have their Level I and Level II certificates
will be eligible for the Trainers course. Starting in the fall,
Level I courses will be booked by provincial affiliates and held
throughout Canada to further the numbers of certified persons.
Trainers will be provided honorariums for each course as determined
by the provincial association. This is a wonderful opportunity for
motivated individuals to gain instructor experience working with
diverse audiences of athletes, recreational participants and
up-and-coming officials. More information on the Train-the-trainers
course will be listed on the calendar page of the website.
3. Provincial Updates
A number of provinces are finalizing their applications for
provincial government recognition for their amateur kickboxing
associations (PSO - provincial sporting organization). Currently,
Ontario , Newfoundland, PEI, and Nova Scotia are working with CKA/CASK
in this process. It is hoped that by the end of 2006, there will be
PSOs in 7-8 provinces.
Once a provincial group has become a member of CKA/CASK they will be
permitted to assign a fee to members for competitive events hosted
within the province. Information on any changes of fees due to
provincial associations will be provided by those associations and
our office. It is expected that the increase will be very small in
the first year of any provincial operation.
This is exciting news for amateur kickboxing in Canada. For many
years amateur kickboxing was non-existent in some provinces, and run
with little government and organizational support in others. The
future looks bright as this process continues to move forward. There
are now plans for some province-province events, and already early
plans for the very first Canadian National Championships to be held
in late 2006/early 2007. More news to follow!
4. International Events
Two international events are currently being planned for 2006. The
WFK will host their World Amateur Championships in the Central-Asian
country of Uzbekistan from April 25-May 3. These championships will
have divisions in full contact, low kick, Thai, point and continuous
- for men, women and juniors.
The trials for this championships is being hosted by the ROUND ONE
KICKBOXING CLUB in London, Ontario and will be held on February
25-26. If you are are interested, ensure that you have a Canadian
passport (or apply for them immediately). Once the team is selected
- successful athletes will be required to provide their passport
numbers immediately to apply for VISAs. The approximate cost of this
trip will be $2600-$2900 (flight, accommodations, travel).
Nearby hotels are : Comfort Hotel Downtown - 1-800-228-5150
($70-$170/rm); Delta London - 1-519-679-3957 ($100-$210/rm) ;
Knights Inn - 1-800-418-8977 ($50-$90/rm). More information on the
trials and directions to ROUND ONE can be found on the website.
